How We Built Dragan Homestead: A Real Online Store That Ships and Does Local Pickup

Plenty of web designers can drop a “Buy” button on a page. Far fewer have actually run a store – packed the orders, set the pickup rules, and watched what breaks on a real checkout on a busy day. We have, because we built and run our own: Dragan Homestead, our family’s shop at draganhomestead.com.

What it is

Dragan Homestead is a working online store for our family homestead here in Minnesota – Muscovy ducks and ducklings, chicks and hatching eggs, sourdough, farm-fresh eggs, and handcrafted goods like soaps and candles. Real products, a real cart, a real checkout, with statewide Minnesota shipping and a local-pickup option. It isn’t a catalog that emails you back later. You can buy right now.

Why running our own store matters for yours

Selling physical things online is harder than it looks. Shipping rules, pickup versus delivery, inventory that runs out, seasonal availability – you can’t ship a duckling the way you ship a t-shirt. We ran into every one of those problems on our own store first. So when we build a Commerce site for a client, we’re not figuring it out on your dime. We’ve already made the mistakes on ours.

What we learned

The lesson: a store lives or dies on the boring parts. Clear availability, honest shipping, and a checkout that takes ten seconds. A gorgeous product page bolted to a confusing checkout sells nothing. So we design the checkout first now, then make the rest pretty – not the other way around.

The takeaway

If you want a website that actually takes money, not just displays products, that’s our Commerce build – and we run one ourselves every single day. See it live at Dragan Homestead, or look at the store option on our Websites page. When you’re ready, we’ll build you a free preview before you pay a dollar.
